The golden ratio, represented by the Greek letter φ (phi) and approximately equal to 1.618034, describes a special way of dividing a length into two parts, a (longer) and b (shorter), so that the ratio of the whole length to the longer part equals the ratio of the longer part to the shorter part.

(a + b) ÷ a = a ÷ b = φ

Where L is the total length, a is the longer segment, b is the shorter segment, and φ = (1 + √5) ÷ 2 ≈ 1.618034. Depending on which value you already know, the calculator solves for the other two using:

Know L: a = L ÷ φ, b = L − a
Know a: b = a ÷ φ, L = a + b
Know b: a = b × φ, L = a + b
