Understanding Margin in Business

Margin (%): Profit margin is the percentage of revenue that represents profit after covering costs. It tells you how much you actually keep from each sale once expenses are subtracted.
👉 Example: If you sell an item for $100 and your cost is $80, your profit is $20. Your profit margin is $20 ÷ $100 = 20%.

Revenue: Revenue is the total amount you charge the customer (selling price).

Profit: Profit is the amount left after subtracting the cost from revenue.

Formula for Margin Calculations

Revenue = Cost ÷ (1 − Margin/100)
Profit = Revenue − Cost

Examples of Margin Calculations Using the Calculator

Example 1

Cost: $2,500
Margin: 25%

Revenue = 2,500 ÷ (1 − 0.25) = $3,333.33
Profit = 3,333.33 − 2,500 = $833.33

✅ Final Result: Revenue = $3,333.33 | Profit = $833.33

Example 2

Cost: $1,000
Margin: 40%

Revenue = 1,000 ÷ (1 − 0.40) = $1,666.67
Profit = 1,666.67 − 1,000 = $666.67

✅ Final Result: Revenue = $1,666.67 | Profit = $666.67

Example 3

Cost: $5,000
Margin: 30%

Revenue = 5,000 ÷ (1 − 0.30) = $7,142.86
Profit = 7,142.86 − 5,000 = $2,142.86

✅ Final Result: Revenue = $7,142.86 | Profit = $2,142.86

Example 4

Cost: $800
Margin: 50%

Revenue = 800 ÷ (1 − 0.50) = $1,600
Profit = 1,600 − 800 = $800

✅ Final Result: Revenue = $1,600 | Profit = $800

👉 These examples show how setting different margins affects the required selling price and profitability.
