Percent to Goal Calculator

Our Percent to Goal Calculator shows how far you are toward a target as a percentage. Enter your progress and your goal to see the percentage reached, a progress bar, how much is left (or how far past the goal you are) and a quick status.

Quick answer

Percent to goal is progress ÷ goal × 100: 750 ÷ 1,000 × 100 = 75%.

  • Remaining: goal − progress = 250 to go, or 25% of the goal
  • Over 100% means the goal has been passed (1,200 of 1,000 = 120%)
  • Same unit: progress and goal must be in the same unit
  • The goal cannot be 0

What Is Percent to Goal?

Percent to goal, also called percent of goal or goal attainment, is the share of a target you have reached so far. A sales team with $75,000 in sales against a $100,000 target is at 75% to goal:

75,000 ÷ 100,000 = 0.75 = 75%

It works for any measurable target: money saved, steps walked, pages written, funds raised or units sold.

How to Calculate Percent to Goal

% to goal = progress ÷ goal × 100
  1. Divide your progress by your goal. 3,200 ÷ 5,000 = 0.64.
  2. Multiply by 100. 0.64 × 100 = 64%.

This is the same as finding what percentage one number is of another, which the Percentage Calculator also does.

Percent to Goal Examples

ProgressGoal% to goal
7501,00075%
3,2005,00064%
456075%
2825%
1333.33%
1,2001,000120%

How Much Is Left

Subtract your progress from the goal to see what is left, then divide by the goal for the percentage still to go:

left = 1,000 − 750 = 250
250 ÷ 1,000 = 25% to go

The percentage done and the percentage left always add up to 100%. The progress bar in the calculator shows both.

Going Over 100%

If progress is bigger than the goal, the answer is over 100%:

1,200 ÷ 1,000 = 120%
over by 200, or 20%

The calculator shows how far past the goal you are, both as an amount and as a percentage of the goal.

Goals That Start From a Baseline

Some goals do not start at 0, such as losing weight from 90 kg to 80 kg. Measure both numbers from the starting point:

progress = 90 − 86 = 4
goal = 90 − 80 = 10
4 ÷ 10 = 40%

Then enter 4 as the progress and 10 as the goal. Entering 86 and 80 directly would wrongly give 107.5%.

Common Mistakes

  • Swapping the numbers. 750 of 1,000 is 75%; 1,000 ÷ 750 would give 133.33%.
  • Mixing units. Convert minutes and hours, or thousands and units, first.
  • Ignoring a baseline. Measure progress from where you started, not from 0.
  • Reading 75% as 75 left. 75% done means 25% of the goal is still to go.

How to Use the Percent to Goal Calculator

  1. Enter your progress. Type the amount reached so far, such as 750. Decimals and commas such as 3,200 work.
  2. Enter your goal. Type the target in the same unit, such as 1000. The goal cannot be 0.
  3. Read and copy the result. The percentage of the goal appears as you type, with a progress bar, the working, how much is left or how far past the goal you are, and a status. Press Copy to copy it, or Clear or Esc to start again.

Example: you have saved $3,200 toward a $5,000 goal. Enter 3200 and 5000. The result is 64%, with 1,800 to go (36% of the goal) and the status "Halfway or more".

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How do you calculate percent to goal?

Divide your progress by your goal and multiply by 100. 750 ÷ 1,000 × 100 = 75%.

How do you calculate how much of a goal is left?

Subtract progress from the goal: 1,000 − 750 = 250 left. As a percentage, 250 ÷ 1,000 = 25% to go, which is 100% minus the percent done.

What does over 100% to goal mean?

It means you have passed the goal. 1,200 against a goal of 1,000 is 120%, which is 200 or 20% over the target.

What percentage of my sales goal have I reached?

Divide your sales so far by the sales target and multiply by 100. $75,000 of a $100,000 target is 75% to goal.

How do I calculate progress for a weight loss goal?

Measure from your starting weight. From 90 kg aiming for 80 kg, at 86 kg you have lost 4 of 10 kg, which is 4 ÷ 10 = 40% of the goal.

Is percent to goal the same as percent of goal?

Yes. Percent to goal, percent of goal and goal attainment all mean progress ÷ goal × 100.

What is 45 out of 60 as a percentage of the goal?

45 out of 60 is 75%, because 45 ÷ 60 = 0.75.

Can the goal be 0?

No. Percent to goal divides by the goal, and dividing by 0 is undefined.

Is the Percent to Goal Calculator free?
