Understanding Overtime Pay

Overtime Pay: Overtime pay is the additional wage employees earn when they work beyond their standard working hours. Most companies calculate overtime at a higher rate (commonly 1.5x or 2x the regular hourly wage) to compensate employees fairly for extra effort.
👉 For example, if your hourly wage is $20 and the overtime multiplier is 1.5, your overtime hourly rate will be:
20 × 1.5 = $30
This ensures employees earn extra income for working beyond regular hours.

Formula to Calculate Overtime Pay

Overtime Hourly Rate = Hourly Wage × Overtime Multiplier

Overtime Pay (Monthly) = Overtime Hourly Rate × Overtime Hours per Month

Total Salary = Base Monthly Salary + Overtime Pay

Effective Hourly Wage = Total Monthly Salary ÷ Total Hours Worked in a Month

Examples of Overtime Calculations

Example 1: Standard Case with Moderate Overtime

Hourly Wage: $23 | Hours per Week: 40 | Overtime Multiplier: 1.5 | Overtime Hours per Month: 20

Step 1: Base Monthly Salary = 23 × 40 × 4.33 = $3,986.67

Step 2: Overtime Hourly Wage = 23 × 1.5 = $34.50

Step 3: Overtime Pay = 34.50 × 20 = $690.00

Step 4: Total Monthly Salary = 3,986.67 + 690.00 = $4,676.67

Step 5: Effective Hourly Wage = 4,676.67 ÷ ((40 × 4.33) + 20) ≈ $24.19

✅ Final Results:
Monthly Salary (without OT): $3,986.67
Overtime Pay (monthly): $690.00
Total Monthly Salary: $4,676.67
Effective Hourly Wage: $24.19
Overtime Hourly Rate: $34.50

Example 2: Higher Overtime Rate (Double Pay)

Hourly Wage: $50 | Hours per Week: 45 | Overtime Multiplier: 2.0 | Overtime Hours per Month: 25

Step 1: Base Salary = 50 × 45 × 4.33 = $9,742.50

Step 2: Overtime Hourly Rate = 50 × 2 = $100

Step 3: Overtime Pay = 100 × 25 = $2,500

Step 4: Total Salary = 9,742.50 + 2,500 = $12,242.50

Step 5: Effective Hourly Wage = 12,242.50 ÷ ((45 × 4.33) + 25) ≈ $55.63

✅ Final Results:
Monthly Salary (without OT): $9,750.00
Overtime Pay (monthly): $2,500.00
Total Monthly Salary: $12,250.00
Effective Hourly Wage: $55.68
Overtime Hourly Rate: $100.00

Example 3: Minimal Overtime Hours

Hourly Wage: $18 | Hours per Week: 35 | Overtime Multiplier: 1.25 | Overtime Hours per Month: 10

Step 1: Base Monthly Salary = 18 × 35 × 4.33 = $2,730.00

Step 2: Overtime Hourly Rate = 18 × 1.25 = $22.50

Step 3: Overtime Pay = 22.50 × 10 = $225.00

Step 4: Total Salary = 2,730.00 + 225.00 = $2,955.00

Step 5: Effective Hourly Wage = 2,955.00 ÷ ((35 × 4.33) + 10) ≈ $18.28

✅ Final Results:
Monthly Salary (without OT): $2,730.00
Overtime Pay (monthly): $225.00
Total Monthly Salary: $2,955.00
Effective Hourly Wage: $18.28
Overtime Hourly Rate: $22.50
