Total Asset Turnover Calculator
Our Total Asset Turnover Calculator shows how much revenue a business earns for every unit of assets it owns. Enter total assets at the start and end of the period and the revenue for the period: the calculator averages the assets, divides revenue by the average and shows the ratio with the working. It suits business owners, analysts, investors, lenders and students comparing how efficiently companies use their resources.
Quick answer
Total asset turnover is revenue ÷ average total assets: 2,500,000 ÷ 1,275,000 ≈ 1.96, so each 1 of assets brought in about 1.96 of revenue.
- Higher is usually better: more revenue from the same assets.
- Average assets: (beginning + ending) ÷ 2, from the balance sheet.
- Industry matters: retailers run high, utilities run low.
- Not profit: combine with profit margin to get return on assets.
What Is Total Asset Turnover?
Total asset turnover is an efficiency ratio that measures how much revenue a company generates from everything it owns: cash, receivables, inventory, buildings, equipment and intangible assets. It answers the question: how much do we sell for every 1 of assets?
= Revenue
÷ Average total assets
= (Beginning + Ending) ÷ 2
- Revenue: net sales for the period, from the income statement.
- Beginning and ending total assets: from the balance sheets at the start and end of the same period.
Averaging the two balance sheets matters because revenue is earned over the whole period, while assets are measured on single days.
How to Calculate Total Asset Turnover
A wholesale distributor had total assets of 1,200,000 at the start of the year and 1,350,000 at the end. Revenue for the year was 2,500,000:
= 1,275,000
2,500,000 ÷ 1,275,000 ≈ 1.96
- Average the assets. (1,200,000 + 1,350,000) ÷ 2 = 1,275,000.
- Divide revenue by the average. 2,500,000 ÷ 1,275,000 ≈ 1.96.
- Read the result. Each 1 of assets produced about 1.96 of revenue during the year.
Total Asset Turnover Examples
| Business: revenue ÷ average | Turnover |
|---|---|
| Retailer: 1,200,000 ÷ 600,000 | 2 |
| Distributor: 2,500,000 ÷ 1,275,000 | ≈ 1.96 |
| Logistics: 1,800,000 ÷ 2,250,000 | 0.8 |
| Utility: 3,060,000 ÷ 10,200,000 | 0.3 |
The retailer (assets 500,000 then 700,000) turns its assets twice a year because stock sells quickly and stores are often leased. The logistics company (2,000,000 then 2,500,000) needs trucks and warehouses, so each 1 of assets brings in only 0.8. The utility (10,000,000 then 10,400,000) owns power plants and networks, so a ratio of 0.3 is normal for it.
What Is a Good Total Asset Turnover?
| Industry | Typical turnover |
|---|---|
| Retail and grocery | High |
| Technology services | High |
| Manufacturing | Moderate |
| Logistics | Moderate to low |
| Utilities, telecoms | Low |
This table is a rough guide only. There is no single good number: compare a company with its own past years and with competitors in the same industry. A rising ratio means revenue is growing faster than assets; a falling ratio can mean new investment that has not paid off yet, or idle assets.
Asset Turnover and Return on Assets
Asset turnover measures efficiency, not profit. The DuPont analysis links it to profit:
= Net profit margin
× Asset turnover
The distributor above, with a 5% net profit margin and a turnover of about 1.96, earns a return on assets of about 5% × 1.96 ≈ 9.8%. A supermarket can earn a good return with thin margins and high turnover; a utility needs higher margins to make up for low turnover.
Limitations and Common Mistakes
- Comparing different industries. Asset needs differ so much that cross-industry comparisons mislead.
- Using one balance sheet. Ending assets alone distort the ratio when a large purchase or sale happened during the year.
- Old, depreciated assets. A low book value inflates the ratio even if the equipment needs replacing.
- Leasing vs owning. Leased stores or vehicles may not sit on the balance sheet in the same way, which raises turnover.
- Seasonal businesses. Year-end assets may not reflect the asset level during peak trading.
Key Terms
- Total assets
- Everything a company owns, from its balance sheet.
- Average assets
- (Beginning + ending total assets) ÷ 2.
- Revenue
- Net sales for the period.
- Fixed asset turnover
- Revenue ÷ average fixed assets only.
- Return on assets
- Net income ÷ average total assets.
How to Use the Total Asset Turnover Calculator
- Enter beginning total assets. Type total assets from the balance sheet at the start of the period, such as 1,200,000.
- Enter ending total assets and revenue. Type total assets at the end of the period, such as 1,350,000, and the revenue for the same period, such as 2,500,000.
- Read and copy the result. Total asset turnover appears as you type, with the working, the average total assets, the change in assets and the assets needed per 1 of revenue. Press Copy to copy it, or Clear or Esc to start again.
Example: beginning assets 500,000, ending assets 700,000 and revenue 1,200,000. The result is 2, from 1,200,000 ÷ ((500,000 + 700,000) ÷ 2) = 1,200,000 ÷ 600,000 = 2.
Who Can Use This Calculator?
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
How do you calculate total asset turnover?
Divide revenue by average total assets, where average total assets = (beginning total assets + ending total assets) ÷ 2. Total asset turnover = revenue ÷ average total assets.
What is the total asset turnover if assets go from 1,200,000 to 1,350,000 and revenue is 2,500,000?
About 1.96. Average assets are (1,200,000 + 1,350,000) ÷ 2 = 1,275,000, and 2,500,000 ÷ 1,275,000 ≈ 1.96.
What does a total asset turnover of 2 mean?
The business earned 2 of revenue for every 1 of assets during the period. Put the other way, it needed 0.5 of assets for each 1 of revenue.
What is a good total asset turnover ratio?
It depends on the industry. Retailers often have high ratios and utilities low ones. Compare a company with its own history and with similar businesses rather than with a single target number.
Why use average total assets instead of ending assets?
Revenue is earned over the whole period, while assets are measured on single dates. Averaging the beginning and ending balances gives a fairer picture when assets changed during the year.
How is total asset turnover different from fixed asset turnover?
Total asset turnover uses all assets, including cash, receivables and inventory. Fixed asset turnover uses only property, plant and equipment, so it focuses on how well long-term assets are used.
How does asset turnover relate to return on assets?
In the DuPont analysis, return on assets = net profit margin × asset turnover. A 5% margin with a turnover of 1.96 gives a return on assets of about 9.8%.
Is the Total Asset Turnover Calculator free?
Yes. It is completely free, needs no sign-up, and can be used as many times as you like.
